What is HIV ? HIV is Human Immunodeficiency Virus the virus that causes the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome or AIDS. Scientists have known about this virus for several years but it has been called by other names which has led to confusion. Most scientists throughout the world have now agreed the name HIV. Viruses are very small and cannot be seen. Ordinary microscopes cannot detect them but they can be seen in specimens examined with a powerful electron microscope. Unlike bacteria, viruses are not destroyed by antibiotics. key #
