Offline Database

Healthdata was also available as a disc based offline database, also in the viewdata format.  It seems as if it was mostly a copy of the online content, so we present it here for your delight and access..

Do note that this information is at least 20 years old.  Please do not rely on anything in here as current medical advice; for that please visit the NHS website.

            Coughs and Colds

Colds are caused by viruses and as
yet there is no cure. The body resists
the infection within a few days and you
then have immunity to that virus. That
is why colds are much commoner in young
children - they have not built up their
 immunity to the common viruses.

Coughing is a normal reflex action
that clears the throat and prevents the
 airways from becoming blocked. Medicine
to suppress a cough is not very useful
 and may be harmful.

Most coughs and colds will improve
within a week and you should not need
 to see a doctor.
